Maintenance of Standby Generator Sets
The vast majority of generator sets installed in Greece are used solely for standby operation, i.e. during power cuts, and for only a few dozen hours a year. As a result, a myth has arisen that ‘since it doesn't run often, it doesn't need regular maintenance and inspection’.
The engine manufacturer specifies annual preventive maintenance which includes changing the lubricant, coolant and filters once a year, even with zero operating hours.
That, however, is the most straightforward part.
A genset is not simply a diesel engine…..It is a small power station whose automatic systems monitor, round the clock, the most vital asset of any business…its electricity supply.
The engine may run only rarely, but the static charger, coolant pre-heating, generator windings, automatic start system, mains voltage monitor, mains changeover relays, etc. operate continuously. These are just some of the sensitive electrical and electronic systems in a genset that are under constant stress and must be checked during annual maintenance.
Experience shows that for standby gensets, one service a year on its own is not enough to guarantee operational readiness.
That is why there is a need for periodic technical inspection.
Inspection intervals are usually set according to how critical the installation is, ranging from once a month to once every four months. The more frequent the inspections, the lower the risk that an unexpected issue nobody spots in time will leave us without power at the next mains failure.
We therefore propose to carry out a free technical inspection in order, on the one hand, to establish the condition of your business's standby power source and, on the other, to present the benefits of the Standby Cover programme from PETROGEN.
Our company, specialising in gensets and receiving ongoing training as part of the authorised generator service network of PETROGEN, provides technical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to ensure 100% readiness of your generator.
